How fast AI reached a million users — and why every user league table is wrong
ChatGPT took five days. DeepSeek took fourteen. Most other models have no figure at all — not because nobody counted, but because they were never launched cold. Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI were switched on inside products that already had billions of accounts. This report sets out what can actually be verified about AI user numbers in the US and China, and the three structural reasons the published rankings disagree with each other by as much as four times.

Key takeaways
- →ChatGPT’s five days is real and primary-sourced. OpenAI’s Greg Brockman posted it on day five: “ChatGPT just crossed 1 million users; it’s been 5 days since launch.” HIGH
- →Most models have no time-to-1M figure, and that is the finding. Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI never reached a million users — they were switched on for hundreds of millions of existing accounts. Ranking them against ChatGPT is a category error.
- →DeepSeek is the more interesting curve. Fourteen days to its first million — slower than ChatGPT — then roughly 100 million in seven days at the end of January 2025. MEDIUM
- →You cannot sum a Chinese league table. QuestMobile’s national total of 499M is deduplicated; the per-app figures are not. Doubao, Qwen and DeepSeek alone sum to 679M against it. HIGH
- →The disagreements are enormous. Claude appears at 56M and 245M monthly users in the same period — a 4.4× spread for one metric. CONTESTED
- →US and Chinese numbers are not measured the same way. US leaders disclose their own figures; Chinese rankings come from third-party device panels. They are not like-for-like and should never be placed in one column.
Part 1: Time to one million users
This is the comparison everyone wants, so here it is — with the caveat that only some rows belong in the same table at all.
| Product | Time to 1M | Launched | Basis | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Threads | 1 hour | Jul 2023 | Launched into Instagram’s existing account base — the clearest example of why this metric flatters bundled products | MEDIUM |
| ChatGPT | 5 days | Nov 2022 | Stated by OpenAI president Greg Brockman on day five. A genuine cold start — no existing user base, no bundling, no default placement. | HIGH |
| DeepSeek | 14 days | Jan 2025 | Also a cold start, and from a company almost nobody outside China had heard of. Then the curve went vertical — see below. | MEDIUM |
| Spotify | 5 months | 2008 | Pre-AI benchmark | MEDIUM |
| ~2.5 months | 2010 | Pre-AI benchmark | MEDIUM | |
| 10 months | 2004 | Pre-AI benchmark | MEDIUM | |
| Netflix | ~3.5 years | 1999 | Pre-AI benchmark | MEDIUM |
| Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI, Claude, Grok, Llama — no comparable figure exists. See the next section; this is not a gap in our research. | ||||
Why most models have no number — and why that matters more than the ones that do
The absence is not an oversight. It is structural, and it invalidates most of the charts in circulation.
ChatGPT launched cold. In November 2022 it had no users, no distribution, no default placement in anything. Every one of that first million arrived by choosing to. That is what makes five days a meaningful number.
Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI did not launch — they were switched on. Gemini appeared inside Google accounts. Copilot appeared inside Microsoft 365. Meta AI appeared inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. Each crossed a million users in whatever interval it took the rollout to reach a million existing account-holders, which measures deployment speed, not demand. Threads is the purest case: one hour, because Instagram handed it a user base at the door.
Claude, Grok and Llama simply never announced one. By 2023 the milestone had stopped being newsworthy, and none of the three had reason to volunteer a small early number.
So a chart ranking “Threads 1 hour, ChatGPT 5 days, Instagram 2.5 months” is comparing a bundled rollout, a cold start and a pre-smartphone consumer launch as though they were the same event. The only clean AI-to-AI comparison in the entire dataset is ChatGPT’s five days against DeepSeek’s fourteen — two products that genuinely started from zero.
The DeepSeek curve is the more instructive one
DeepSeek was slower to its first million than ChatGPT, and then far faster to its hundredth. Released 11 January 2025, it reportedly took 14 days to a million, and by the end of January had accumulated roughly 125 million users — with over 80% of them arriving in the final week, about 100 million in seven days. ChatGPT, by comparison, took around two months to reach 100 million. MEDIUM
It topped the US App Store on 27 January 2025, roughly two weeks after launch, and passed 110 million downloads by 9 February. MEDIUM
The lesson is about the shape, not the winner. ChatGPT’s growth was a novelty curve — a new category, discovered by the curious. DeepSeek’s was a substitution curve: the category already existed, users already understood it, and a credible free alternative could therefore move a hundred million people in a week. Second movers in an established category grow differently from first movers in a new one, and no time-to-1M chart captures that.
Part 2: Where the US models are now
One figure here is solid. The rest are estimates that disagree with each other, and we have marked them accordingly.
| Product | Reported users | Metric | Note | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 900M+ | Weekly active | Company-disclosed by OpenAI, alongside 50M+ consumer subscribers. The single most reliable number in this report. | HIGH |
| ChatGPT | ~1B | Monthly active (app) | Reported crossing 1B monthly app users in May 2026. Different metric — not a contradiction of the row above. | MEDIUM |
| Gemini | 750M–900M | Monthly active | Sources disagree across this range for the same period. Distribution inside Google products makes “user” unusually elastic here. | CONTESTED |
| Meta AI | ~600M | Monthly active | Bundled across WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. Presence is not the same as use. | MEDIUM |
| Copilot | ~220M | Monthly active | Bundled into Microsoft 365 | MEDIUM |
| Claude | 56M … 245M | Monthly active | A 4.4× spread in the same period. We publish the range rather than pick, because there is no basis on which to choose. | CONTESTED |
| Grok | ~400K | Users, first month | Bloomberg, 22 Sep 2026 — but this is the Grok Bot Agent specifically, a single product, not Grok overall. Frequently miscited as a whole-platform figure. | HIGH |
| Perplexity | ~30M | Monthly active | — | MEDIUM |
Part 3: Where the Chinese models are now
The Chinese picture is better measured than the American one in one respect — there is a single dominant tracker, QuestMobile, publishing a consistent series — and worse in another: almost nothing is company-disclosed.
| App | MAU | Owner | Note | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doubao (豆包) | 382M | ByteDance | Clear leader. Other trackers put it at 345M (March) and “240–260M” for mid-2026 — a wide spread for one app in one year. | MEDIUM |
| Qwen (通义千问) | 167M | Alibaba | The steepest climb in the set — reported growth of roughly 58× year on year | MEDIUM |
| DeepSeek | 130M | DeepSeek | Other trackers say 145–180M depending on month. Notably below its January 2025 peak — the substitution curve cut both ways. | MEDIUM |
| Yuanbao (元宝) | top 4 | Tencent | Ranked fourth by QuestMobile; no consistent figure published | MEDIUM |
| ERNIE Bot (文心一言) | ~200–300M claimed | Baidu | Default placement inside Baidu Search and Baidu Maps. This is the clearest case where “user” means “was shown it”, and the range reflects that. | CONTESTED |
| All China AI-native apps | 499M | QuestMobile | Deduplicated, May 2026, +85.4% YoY. Q1 2026 was 440M. | HIGH |
Look at the last row against the ones above it. Doubao, Qwen and DeepSeek alone total 679M. The national deduplicated figure is 499M. Both are from the same tracker, and both are correct — because heavy users run three or four assistants, and QuestMobile removes the overlap at the national level but not at the app level.
This single fact invalidates most published comparisons. Any chart that adds Chinese app MAUs to produce a market total is double-counting, often by 30–40%. It also means a Chinese app’s MAU and a US app’s MAU do not mean the same thing even before you get to methodology.
The three reasons the league tables disagree
1. Metric soup
Weekly actives, monthly actives, app-only monthly actives, downloads, registered accounts and web visits are six different numbers, and they are swapped freely. ChatGPT alone circulates as 900M (weekly actives, official), 1B (monthly app users), 800M (an older weekly figure still being quoted) and, in at least one widely-shared roundup, 2.8 billion monthly active users — roughly a third of humanity, which should have failed a sanity check before publication.
Downloads are the worst offender. DeepSeek’s 110M+ downloads and its ~130M monthly actives are different quantities measuring different things, and both get printed as “users.”
2. Deduplication, applied inconsistently
Covered above: QuestMobile deduplicates nationally but not per app. Nobody deduplicates across the US and China. A person using ChatGPT at work and Doubao at home is two users in every chart you have seen.
3. Panel estimates versus company disclosures
This is the one that makes US-versus-China comparison structurally unsound. US figures are mostly company-disclosed — OpenAI states its own weekly actives, and has an incentive to define them favourably but a strong disincentive to invent them outright. Chinese figures are mostly third-party panel measurements, where QuestMobile infers usage from a sample of devices and extrapolates. Panel measurement is a legitimate method with a known error band; it is not an audited count, and it is not the same kind of number as a disclosure.
Placing the two in one ranked column implies a precision that neither supports.
And a worked example of how this goes wrong
While researching this report we encountered a headline reporting “Doubao 3.8 Billion Users.” The actual figure is 382 million — the error is a mistranslation of 3.8亿 (3.8 hundred-million, the standard Chinese numeric unit) into “3.8 billion.” A factor-of-ten error, published, and now available to be cited onward by anyone who does not read Chinese numerals. DERIVED
Analysis: what can actually be said
One number in this report is solid. OpenAI’s 900M+ weekly actives is company-disclosed, recent, and consistently reported. Everything else is an estimate, a range, or a different metric wearing the same label.
The US leads on a single product; China leads on distribution. ChatGPT’s ~900M weekly actives is larger than the entire deduplicated Chinese AI-native app market at 499M. But China’s market grew 85.4% year on year, is split across four credible competitors rather than one, and reaches users through default placement in search, maps and social apps that no US lab can match domestically. Those are different kinds of strength and the ranking depends entirely on which you think matters.
The adoption-speed story has already changed shape. ChatGPT’s five days measured novelty — how fast a genuinely new thing spreads. DeepSeek’s hundred million in a week measured substitution — how fast users move when the category is understood and something free and credible appears. The next inflection will be a third shape again, and time-to-1M will not capture it, because no significant model now launches cold.
The honest summary is uncomfortable for a statistics site to publish: outside OpenAI’s own disclosure and QuestMobile’s national series, the AI user numbers in wide circulation are not reliable enough to rank. We have published the ranges and marked the contested figures rather than manufacture a tidy table, because a tidy table here would be fiction.
Frequently asked
How long did ChatGPT take to reach 1 million users?
Five days. OpenAI president Greg Brockman stated it publicly on day five: “ChatGPT just crossed 1 million users; it’s been 5 days since launch.” It launched on 30 November 2022 with no existing user base, no bundling and no default placement, which is what makes the figure meaningful.
Which AI reached 1 million users fastest?
Among genuine cold starts, ChatGPT at five days, ahead of DeepSeek at fourteen. Threads reached a million in about an hour but launched into Instagram’s existing account base, and Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI have no comparable figure because they were switched on inside products that already had hundreds of millions of accounts. Ranking bundled rollouts against cold starts is a category error.
How many users does ChatGPT have in 2026?
More than 900 million weekly active users, disclosed by OpenAI, alongside more than 50 million paying consumer subscribers. A separate figure of roughly 1 billion monthly active app users was reported in May 2026 — that is a different metric, not a contradiction. Weekly actives and monthly actives are routinely conflated in published comparisons.
Which Chinese AI app has the most users?
ByteDance’s Doubao, at 382 million monthly active users per QuestMobile, ahead of Alibaba’s Qwen at 167 million and DeepSeek at 130 million. China’s AI-native apps reached 499 million monthly active users in May 2026, up 85.4% year on year — but that national figure is deduplicated while the per-app figures are not, so the app numbers cannot be added together.
Do Chinese or US AI models have more users?
They are not measured the same way, so the comparison is unsound as usually presented. ChatGPT’s roughly 900 million weekly active users exceeds China’s entire deduplicated AI-native app market of 499 million. But US figures are mostly company-disclosed while Chinese figures come from third-party device panels, and China’s market is growing 85.4% year on year across four credible competitors rather than concentrating in one product.
Why do AI user numbers vary so much between sources?
Three reasons. Weekly actives, monthly actives, downloads and registered accounts are different metrics used interchangeably. Deduplication is applied nationally but not per app, so summing app totals double-counts. And company disclosures are being ranked alongside panel estimates as though they carry the same precision. The result is spreads like Claude appearing at both 56 million and 245 million monthly users in the same period.
Methodology & sources
Confidence chips follow our standard scale, with one addition for this report: CONTESTED marks a figure where credible sources disagree by a margin large enough that we decline to pick one, and publish the range instead. OpenAI’s weekly-active figure and the Brockman statement are HIGH — company-disclosed and primary respectively. QuestMobile’s national series is HIGH as a consistently-published tracker, while individual app MAUs from the same source are MEDIUM because other trackers give materially different numbers for the same months. Pre-AI benchmarks (Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify) are widely repeated and rarely primary-sourced; we include them for scale only. Primary sources could not be opened directly from our research environment — most relevant domains are unreachable through our network egress — so figures were assembled from convergent secondary reporting and are rated accordingly. Where we found only one source for a claim, we have said so inline. Quarterly cadence. Next review: December 2026.
