AI venture capital, 2022–2025
AI captured 61% of all global venture capital in 2025 — about $258.7 billion of $427.1 billion deployed (OECD). After dipping from its 2021 peak, VC investment into AI firms rose roughly 109% between 2023 and 2025, recovering to record levels. AI’s share of all venture capital has climbed steadily as non-AI funding stayed flat. Corporate AI investment had already reached $252.3 billion in 2024 (Stanford HAI).
Why funding is so concentrated
Frontier-model training is extraordinarily capital-intensive, so a handful of labs absorb a disproportionate share of capital. OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Scale AI, and Project Prometheus each raised more than $5 billion in 2025; together they accounted for roughly one-fifth of all venture funding worldwide (Crunchbase). That concentration is one reason analysts debate whether AI investment is a durable buildout or a bubble.
Venture momentum: 2025 in review
KPMG’s Venture Pulse confirms the scale: global VC investment climbed past $500 billion in 2025, up from $391.9 billion in 2024, with Q4’25 alone reaching $138 billion — the highest quarterly total in 14 quarters — fuelled almost entirely by AI (KPMG Venture Pulse Q4 2025). In Q4’25, eight U.S. AI companies each raised $1 billion or more, including Anysphere (Cursor, $2.3B), Reflection AI ($2.0B), Lambda ($1.5B) and Crusoe ($1.4B).
“AI took 61% of global venture capital in 2025 — more than double its 30% share in 2022, and the engine behind a record fundraising year.”
The infrastructure supercycle
Beyond startup funding, the largest cloud providers are pouring record sums into data centers and compute. Combined hyperscaler capex is projected to exceed $600 billion in 2026 — roughly a 36% increase over 2025’s record levels — with the majority directed at AI infrastructure (Goldman Sachs; BloombergNEF). IDC puts AI infrastructure spending at roughly $90 billion in Q4 2025 and forecasts $487 billion for full-year 2026 (~53% growth), exceeding $1 trillion by 2029 at a ~31% CAGR (IDC). Projected 2026 capex: Amazon ~$200B, Alphabet ~$175–185B, Meta ~$115–135B, Microsoft ~$120B+, Oracle ~$50B.
