Enterprise leadership has flipped
The LLM market’s leadership has reversed. Anthropic now earns 40% of enterprise LLM API spend, overtaking OpenAI (27%) for the first time (Menlo Ventures, 2025 State of Generative AI in the Enterprise). Between 2023 and 2025, OpenAI lost almost half its share (50% to 27%) while Anthropic more than tripled its own (12% to 40%) and Google climbed from 7% to 21%. The top three providers now account for roughly 88% of enterprise LLM API usage.
Enterprise LLM spending hit $8.4 billion mid-2025, more than doubling in six months from $3.5 billion in November 2024 — a 2.4× jump that reflects how quickly production workloads scaled.
Why Anthropic overtook OpenAI
The shift was driven almost entirely by coding workloads. Claude Code reached $1 billion in annualized revenue within six months of its May 2025 launch, and Anthropic now commands 54% of the enterprise coding market vs. OpenAI’s 21%. Coding is the single largest enterprise GenAI use case (~55% of departmental application-layer spend per Menlo), so leadership there translates directly into share of total enterprise spend.
“Enterprise and consumer have split — Anthropic owns the API, OpenAI owns the chat window.”
Consumer market: ChatGPT still dominates
The picture flips on the consumer side. ChatGPT remains the dominant LLM assistant, reaching ~900 million weekly active users in February 2026 (TechCrunch), and OpenAI generates roughly $25 billion in annualized revenue (Sacra). The enterprise and consumer markets are diverging: Anthropic’s API lead and ChatGPT’s consumer reach now tell two different stories.
