The state of play: AI and work in 2026
The defining question of 2026 is not whether AI takes jobs but which jobs, and whose. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects 170 million roles created against 92 million displaced by 2030 — a net gain of 78 million, yet with nearly a fifth of all roles churning along the way. Aggregate optimism coexists with sharp, uneven disruption.
The augmentation story is real and richly rewarded. PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer finds that jobs demanding AI skills now carry a 56% wage premium — up from 25% a year earlier — and keep growing even as overall postings fall. The displacement story, by contrast, is concentrated at the base of the ladder: Stanford’s Canaries in the Coal Mine study documents a 13% relative decline in employment for 22-to-25-year-olds in the most AI-exposed occupations since late 2022, while older workers held steady.
The terms of work are shifting too. Roughly 61% of US firms now deploy AI-driven analytics to score employee productivity, pushing algorithmic management from the gig economy into the mainstream office.
