The AI chatbot race in 2026: ChatGPT still leads, but the field is crowding fast

ChatGPT commands roughly 900 million weekly active users and more than half of all generative-AI web traffic. Yet Google Gemini has quadrupled its share in a year, Meta AI now reaches 1.2 billion people a month, and challengers from DeepSeek to Claude are carving out real ground. Here is the verified picture, source by source.

ChatGPT still sets the pace

OpenAI said ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users on 27 February 2026, up from 800 million the previous October and roughly 400 million a year earlier (TechCrunch, Feb 2026). The app then crossed 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026, the fastest product in history to that mark (TechTimes, Jun 2026). Andreessen Horowitz’s sixth Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps ranking found ChatGPT is still 2.7x larger than the #2, Gemini, on web traffic and 2.5x larger on mobile active users (a16z, Mar 2026). On Similarweb’s traffic measure it held 53.9% of visits across the seven largest chatbots in May 2026 — commanding, but down sharply from 86.7% a year earlier.

Google Gemini closes the gap

Gemini is the clear number two and the fastest riser among the incumbents. Google disclosed at I/O in May 2026 that the Gemini app had passed 900 million monthly active users, up from roughly 400 million a year earlier and 750 million at the start of 2026 (Google I/O, May 2026). Its Similarweb web-visit share climbed to 27.9% in May 2026 from about 5.7% twelve months prior. Counting Google’s wider surface, AI Mode inside Search crossed 1 billion monthly users and AI Overviews reach some 2 billion — a distribution advantage no rival can match.

Meta AI’s billion-user embed

By raw reach, Meta AI is the largest of all: 1.2 billion monthly active users as of Q1 2026, up from the 1 billion Mark Zuckerberg announced in May 2025 (CNBC, May 2025). The caveat matters — most of that usage is embedded in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook rather than a destination app, and Meta reports far smaller engaged cohorts (roughly 185 million weekly). That makes Meta AI a distribution story more than a head-to-head chatbot rival, which is why it trails ChatGPT and Gemini on standalone web traffic despite topping the active-user chart.

The challengers: DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, Copilot

DeepSeek remains the strongest open-weight challenger, reaching an estimated 188 million weekly active users in Q1 2026 — a 6.4x jump from a year earlier — and topping app-store download charts across 150-plus countries. xAI’s Grok hit roughly 117 million monthly active users in March 2026, up from 35 million in December 2025, per figures surfaced in SpaceX’s IPO filing, making it the third most-used assistant in the United States. Perplexity holds about 78 million weekly active users and now handles well over a billion queries a month. Microsoft Copilot reports 100 million-plus monthly active users across Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365, though only about 20 million engage weekly inside the 365 apps.

Claude wins on money, not scale

Anthropic’s Claude is small in consumer reach — roughly 56 million monthly active app users in Q2 2026 — but it grew about 640% year over year, the fastest of the majors, and holds a 9.2% Similarweb web-visit share (Sensor Tower State of AI 2026). Where Claude leads is monetization: a reported 13% paid-conversion rate, roughly double the industry average, and enterprise demand that pushed Anthropic to a $30 billion annualized revenue run-rate by April 2026 (VentureBeat, 2026). In 2026 the chatbot market splits along two axes — consumer scale, still owned by ChatGPT and Gemini, and revenue per user, where Claude punches far above its user count.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI chatbot has the most users in 2026?

By total active users, Meta AI is largest at 1.2 billion monthly, but most of that is embedded in its apps. Among standalone assistants, ChatGPT leads with about 900 million weekly active users, ahead of Gemini’s 900 million monthly.

Is ChatGPT losing market share?

Its share of gen-AI web traffic fell from about 86.7% in mid-2025 to 53.9% by May 2026 (Similarweb), but that reflects rivals scaling rather than ChatGPT shrinking — its own user base kept growing to 900 million weekly.

How fast is Google Gemini growing?

Gemini roughly doubled its app user base in a year to 900 million monthly by May 2026 and lifted its web-visit share from about 5.7% to 27.9%, making it the fastest-growing incumbent assistant.
