LLM Market Report 2026
The enterprise LLM race has flipped. Anthropic now earns more enterprise API spend than OpenAI for the first time — driven almost entirely by coding workloads — while ChatGPT still owns the consumer window by an order of magnitude. Two markets, two different winners. Every figure is linked to its primary source, dated, and rated for confidence.

The state of play: the API and the chat window have split
For two years the LLM market had one obvious leader. That is no longer true, and the reversal was fast: between 2023 and 2025 OpenAI lost almost half its enterprise API share (50% → 27%) while Anthropic more than tripled its own (12% → 40%) and Google climbed from 7% to 21%. The top three now account for roughly 88% of enterprise LLM API usage — a market that consolidated even as it changed hands.
The mechanism was coding. Claude Code reached $1 billion in annualized revenue within six months of launch, and Anthropic now holds 54% of the enterprise coding market against OpenAI’s 21%. Because coding is the single largest enterprise generative-AI use case — roughly 55% of departmental application-layer spend — leadership there converts almost directly into leadership of total enterprise spend. Whoever wins the developer wins the budget.
The consumer picture inverts entirely. ChatGPT still reaches ~900 million weekly users on roughly $25 billion of annualized revenue — a lead no rival is close to. The useful conclusion for anyone reading market-share headlines: there is no single “LLM market share” number. Ask which market. Anthropic owns the API; OpenAI owns the chat window; Google is the only player growing meaningfully in both.
- Enterprise leadership flipped. Anthropic 40% vs OpenAI 27% of API spend in 2025 — the first reversal since the category existed.
- Coding is the whole story. 54% coding share, and coding is ~55% of departmental GenAI spend.
- Consumer is a different market. ChatGPT’s ~900M weekly users and ~$25B run-rate are untouched by the API shift.
Enterprise API share, 2023–2025
Share of enterprise LLM API spend by provider. The three-year view shows the handover clearly — and how much of the “others” tier was absorbed by the top three.
| Provider | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | Move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | 12% | 24% | 40% | +28 pts |
| OpenAI | 50% | ~34% | 27% | −23 pts |
| 7% | ~12% | 21% | +14 pts | |
| Others (Meta, Cohere, Mistral, DeepSeek) | ~31% | ~30% | ~12% | −19 pts |

Why Anthropic overtook OpenAI
The shift traces almost entirely to one workload. Claude Code reached $1 billion in annualized revenue within six months of its May 2025 launch, and Anthropic now commands 54% of the enterprise coding market versus OpenAI’s 21%.
That matters more than it sounds because of where enterprise money actually goes: coding is roughly 55% of departmental application-layer GenAI spend, the largest single category. A provider that wins coding wins a majority of the budget by default. It also explains why the enterprise and consumer markets diverged rather than moving together — the buyer is a different person. Our Enterprise AI Statistics index tracks the spend breakdown by function, and the LLM Token Price Index tracks what that capability now costs per token.
Consumer: ChatGPT still dominates
The picture inverts on the consumer side. ChatGPT remains the dominant LLM assistant at ~900 million weekly active users (TechCrunch, Feb 2026 HIGH), on roughly $25 billion annualized revenue (Sacra MEDIUM). No competitor is within an order of magnitude on weekly consumer reach. For how that consumer lead varies by country — and where it doesn’t hold at all — see Popular AI Models by Country.
FAQ
Who leads the enterprise LLM market?
Anthropic, with 40% of enterprise LLM API spend in 2025, ahead of OpenAI (27%) and Google (21%) — per Menlo Ventures.
How big is the enterprise LLM market?
Enterprise LLM spend reached $8.4 billion mid-2025, up from $3.5 billion in November 2024 — a 2.4× jump in six months.
Does OpenAI still dominate consumer AI?
Yes. ChatGPT remains the leading consumer assistant with ~900M weekly active users in early 2026 and roughly $25B annualized revenue.
Why did Anthropic overtake OpenAI on enterprise spend?
Coding. Anthropic holds 54% of the enterprise coding market, and coding is roughly 55% of departmental GenAI spend — so winning it moves total share directly.
